The History of Craniosacral Therapy…
In the early 1900s, in osteopathic school, William Sutherland came to the conclusion that skull bones are capable of shifting – an unorthodox medical view still not fully accepted today. A visionary and pioneer, sensing the far-reaching spiritual implications of his findings, he developed a treatment method making him the grandfather of cranial osteopathy.
Then John Upledger, D.O., author of Your Inner Physician and You (North Atlantic), made a major leap when he discovered why skull bones move in 1975 (explained below) and started to talk openly about the cranial rhythm. He began working with students who weren’t medical professionals. Ten years later, he founded the Upledger Institute in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. The word was out: “It works!” In 1994 the American Craniosacral Therapy Association, also located in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. was created. Last year, the Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America, which has a sister organization in Europe, was set up with headquarters in Canada.
Still a new kid on the block, when compared to other medical modalities like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, craniosacral therapy with its many schools and forms, is now one of the fastest-growing practices in alternative medicine. Hundreds of massage therapists are being trained, while many psychotherapists, acupuncturists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, dentists, and medical doctors are adding it to their list of tools. Increasingly used as a preventive health measure, this practice seems to be blurring the boundaries between the health professions because it’s easy to learn and safe.
How does craniosacral therapy work…
On a surface level, the practitioner works with the bones of the skull and the pelvis. This affects, in turn, the deeper layers of membranes and cerebrospinal fluids in the spinal canal, the brain, and the spinal cord itself. Why is this important?
A pulse through the fluids proceeds through the entire craniosacral system, like a tidal wave, from the sutures in the skull to the spinal cord. Cycling about six to ten times a minute, causes tiny movements measuring no more than one-or two-sixteenths of an inch. “It’s a hydraulic system,” says Dr. Upledger, noting how all the components work together to regulate the pressure of these fluids on the brain. “There has to be an optimal circulation, which depends on constant mobility,” he explains. When the membranes and lubricating liquids lose their freedom to glide freely, we hurt and symptoms start.
It’s easy to imagine how even the slightest impact, lesion, or distortion can stretch or strain this delicate system. Any infraction causing nerve endings to alter their perception and signals can negatively affect our entire well-being. Craniosacral therapy helps the body to re-establish an unobstructed wave, which is how symptoms disappear.
There’s also a unique and undeniable spiritual dimension to this practice: “The craniosacral wave isn’t just a physical phenomenon,” says Dr. Milne. “It’s also a field of information and intelligence. In the tiny movements of the system, and in the still points in between, is consciousness.” Dr. Upledger refers to this intelligence as the inner physician, explaining: “The inner wisdom which knows what is wrong, why it’s wrong, and how to correct it. The body tells the therapist what needs to be done.”
Thus, craniosacral work is based on a shamanistic and meditative approach as well as on physiological facts, making it doubly powerful.
What happens during a session…
“There is no need for a client to tell me verbally what’s wrong,” Dr. Upledger says. He prefers to remain open to the body’s own language, although some therapists may want to talk with you first. For the hands-on work to be most effective, you should wear loose, thin clothing. This way, the practitioner can better sense what’s going on in your body. You’ll be asked to lie on your back on a massage table.
By quietly resting the hands-on your skull and sacrum, the therapist evaluates your craniosacral rhythms. This in itself can create a shift in energy. Sometimes, the therapist’s hands become aware of places along the column where energy is stuck or heated. She then uses the bones of the sacrum and cranium as “handles” to manipulate the deeper layers of fluid and membranes. No instruments or devices are used.
In sessions lasting 45 – 60 minutes, clients and therapists work closely together. “Ideally,” says Dr. Milne, “the client clears a mental space so something might occur.” The therapist waits and listens. You might feel a quieting down, sinking in, and deeper awareness. The whole idea is that the practitioner works with such gentleness and
subtleness that the body itself can do the healing and necessary adjustments. “It’s a question of trust,” Dr. Upledger notes. A session can be described as a physically connected meditation, in which hidden information in the craniosacral system reveals itself.
Healing then can occur via the corrective mechanism known as the still point, the spontaneous quiet between waves. Typically, you have one every three to four minutes, and it lasts from five to sixty seconds. It’s a natural pause in the rhythm. Synchronizing and optimizing the brain waves, pulses into, through, and linking up parts of the body to the rhythm of the brain.

Aligns many traditions in one single dance of cosmic rhythm and aligns brings what is above to the below restoring and regulating systems that are blocked, in pain, dis-eased from a multitude of reasons.
Sutherland described alternating coiling and uncoiling of the convolutions, or gyri, of the brain. He named the expansion phase the inhalation or flexion phase of the cycle. He termed the constriction phase the exhalation, or extension phase of this cycling of the Primary Respiratory Mechanism. Sutherland recognized the convolutions and fissures of the brain as being
designed to accommodate the intrinsic rhythmical activity of the brain, coiling, and uncoiling in a spiral form. This spiral form of the structures of the brain allows motion to take place in a synchronous fashion, fitting into the structures of the dura mater and cranium. This motion is very subtle (Sutherland 1998, 74-75, 119, Sutherland 1990, 63, 64, 172).

Bridgette Lyn Dolgoff, host of “Carrying Stones And Digging Holes To Cultivate Consciousness” joined Inside the Eye – Live! on 12.12.20. I am not sure how she came up with such a long name but saying it seemed to take up 1/8 of the show. Bridgette co-hosts the show with Kelsey Sweet. It can be heard on Revolution.radio at 8 pm every Saturday on Studio B.
All joking aside, Bridgette Lyn was asked about such a search engine friendly name (lots of keywords in that show name), as well as being asked quite a bit more.
For instance, Bridgette Lyn discussed her long-time efforts to be involved in Nevada politics and how, over time, she became an outsider who was somewhat of an insider.
Much of Bridgette Lyn’s efforts revolve around her practice of alternative medicine so a fair amount of time of the second half of the interview was spent on Lyn’s insights and experiences with alternative medicine practice from both practice and legal/regulatory perspectives.
You can hear the entire interview here:
There is no phrase more frequently mentioned than ‘inherited tendency.’ No man is considered an educated man today who does not mention it at least two or three times a week! An educated man must at least make himself acquainted with what the learned, medical profession has ascertained as to ‘inherited tendencies.’ When a person does not know what to make of himself, most people say at once: ‘he is suffering from an inherited tendency.’ Anyone not saying that is regarded as badly educated, perhaps among other things an Anthroposophist!
Here Science begins not only to go astray in theory but also to be injurious to life. This is the boundary where theory encroaches on morality — where it is immoral to hold a wrong theory. Here, life’s strength and security really depend on correct knowledge. What will a man be able to do who, through the right spiritual conception in his soul, strengthens, fortifies himself by taking in the elixir of life? No matter what he may have inherited, these inheritances are only in the physical body or at most in the etheric body. Through his right conception of the world he will be able to make his own vital center stronger and stronger, and will be able to conquer his inherited tendencies; for the spiritual, if present in the right way, is able to equalize the body.
If, however, a man does not strengthen the spiritual core of his being, merely asserting that the spiritual is the fruit of the physical, he will have a weak inner nature, he will be the victim of his inherited tendencies; they will work harmfully in him. No wonder then, that so-called inherited tendencies have such dreadful results; for people are first of all talked into a belief of the powers of such tendencies and are deprived of what counteracts them. The belief in inherited tendencies is cultivated, and the spiritual conception of the world — the best weapon with which to fight them, — is taken away. First, the power of the inherited tendencies is discovered, and by this means they become active. Not only is this a wrong insight, which arouses a life-destroying activity and takes the weapons of defense out of the hands of the sufferer, but it is the beginning of a theory-based absolutely on a materialistic conception. Here a materialistic conception of the world begins to play a part which is in effect not only theoretically incorrect but immoral.
This cannot be got over, simply by saying that those who assert such things are mistaken. We need not be too severe in judging those who put forth these theories. We are not attacking individual scientists here; it is quite comprehensible that they are involved in a line of thought which must lead to such errors — we must admit this in all fairness. The one, perhaps, may not be able to free himself from scientific tradition; another perhaps considers it excusable, for, having a wife and children he would be in an awkward position if he were to break away from the ruling opinions.
But the whole thing must be considered as a phenomenon of the times, for Science is beginning not only to spread abroad false theories but to take away the life-promoting remedies, the spiritual conception of life, which is able to fortify and which is alone able to stand up against the physical, — the power which must otherwise overwhelm man. The physical can only possess overwhelming power as long as a man does not build up strength in his spiritual nature. If he does this, a warrior will grow up within him, a warrior who will defend him against the physical.

Prana is the life force-the stuff of those zillion stars circling and exploding. Human beings receive it directly into the body through the air. We take it in in other ways as well, through live foods, freshwater, through living, breathing trees, and vegetation. Yogis discovered the beneath the physical structures of the body and interpenetrating and underlying subtle sphere of reality, which they called the energy body or the pranamayakosha (sheath of vital airs). The very nature of this subtle structure is movement, flow, change.
Yogis found that pranamayakosha to be replete with thousands of invisible channels, or nadis, through which prana flows, energized and sustaining all parts of the physical and energy structure. Nadi system looks much like our circulatory system, or nervous system, but much more dense. The prana body contains seventy-two thousand, detailed descriptions of the nadis was apparently mapped out in deep states of meditation in some ancient text that nadis reach over 300 thousand.
There are fourteen major nadis and just three with which we need to be concerned. All three major nadis originate at the base of the spine and move upward through the body. Two of them, the ida and the pingala, crisscross back and forth as they ascend along the areas of the spinal column find their endpoints in the left nostril (ida) and the right nostril (pingala). The third, the shushumna nadi moves up the spine and splits off into the larynx and the cavity of brahman or the ventricle cavity in the physical body.
Yogis beleieve that this energy body is deeply intelligent, possessing what Chogyan Trungpa Rinpoche called “basic intelligence”.
The major receptor sites for prana in human beings are in the nostrils. More than anything else it is breathing that builds and regulates the flow of prana. The breath has an immediate impact on the flow of prana through the Nadis. The rate, depth, balance, and regularity of the breath directly determine the quality of energy flow into the prana body, which directly shapes the pattern of energy flow that underlies and sustains the physical body.
If we disassociate, become ridged and the breath becomes slow and weak we may start to have panic attacks which are an alarm system that tells us there is a lack of vital energy entering our energy bodies/fields and nothing to run the energy framework of the physical body. We may believe that we die from the disease which is the illusion it is the energy body that becomes deflated and energetically suffocates us in the end.
Those aspects of our physical, visceral lives will relegate to the dark basement of our consciousness will inexorably un-determine the conscious and well-intended projects on the surface of our lives. When Freud said, Anatomy is Destiny” he was, of course, referring to gender. But we now understand that anatomy is destiny in many more ways than that. Paraphrasing Freud, we might rightfully say, too, that “Posture is Destiny”.
There is often a split between thinking and feeling, which shows up as chronic tension in the neck and at the base of the skull. The eyes will be disconnected and unresponsive, as attempts not to see. Joints are frozen, and there is often a deep twisting away from the visceral experience of life.
Try as we might to “transcend” the voice of the body through intellect, sheer will power, spirituality, the subterranean power of our unconscious postures will always hold sway. The deep patterning of the body will undermine our most elaborate rationalizations, ideas, hopes, and fantasies. The entire superstructure of our adult lives is underlain by the primal language of our postures. The primary genius of yoga lies precisely in its recognition of the critical role of the body in the development and transformation of character. Most spiritual paths begin with what yogis call “mental bodies”, thoughts and feelings moving us directly to meditation, contemplation, scriptural study, or prayer. Yogis took a radical step in moving the entry point of spiritual practice right to the body. the yogic traditions, therefore, bring our attention directly to the annamayakosha (the physical body) understanding it to be the doorway to the more subtle interior worlds.
